Donald Lee Payne, 85, of Fort Worth, passed away in his home on May 18, 2026.
Donald lived a life marked by service, devotion, humor, and deep love for his family. A proud veteran of the Vietnam War, he served as a helicopter pilot. An experience that remained one of his greatest sources of pride. During his service he was awarded numerous honors, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, and an Air Medal with 19 oak leaf clusters. A testament to his bravery, skill, and dedication. His stories from those years were ones he carried with him always, honoring both the memories and the men he served alongside. And in true Donald fashion, he always believed he could still get everyone wherever they needed to go, if only Grandmom had bought him that turbo prop.
While his military service meant the world to him, nothing ever compared to the pride he felt for his family. He was the devoted husband of his beloved late wife, Leigh Perry Payne, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage after meeting at a Dairy Queen in Mineral Wells, Texas. Since her passing in January 2025, he missed her deeply.
Donald was a proud father to his two daughters, Cheryl (James) Hale and Kimberly (Brandon) Hendrickson, and a deeply devoted “Mega Grandpappa” to his grandchildren: Riley (Jeff) Lashley, Jacob (Hannah) Hale, Cassidy (Cody) Wiederholt, Baylee (Jett) Reeves, Brett Grinder (Shelby), Emma Hendrickson, and Ava Hendrickson. He also leaves behind his cherished great-grandchildren: Jaylyn, Jameson, Jordyn, Audrey, Lane, Colt, Brynleigh, Jersey, and Elora.
He never stopped marveling at the family he helped build. Though he jokingly told them to stop having babies, he was endlessly proud of each and every one. One of his greatest joys was scrolling through photos and videos on his phone, sharing them with anyone who would listen, always beaming as he talked about his family.
Known for his quick wit and perfectly timed one-liners, Donald was truly one of the funniest people you could meet. He never met a stranger, and anyone important to his family instantly became important to him. He was fiercely loyal, deeply kind, and made everyone feel seen, heard, and loved. He also had a signature sense of humor about life—firmly believing that a little Wild Turkey could cure just about anything.
After his years of service, Donald made it his mission to always be present for his family. He showed up without hesitation and without fail. He was strong, steady, and selfless, a constant source of support and love.
Donald had a lifelong love for music. In his younger years, he was an athlete and a musician who loved to sing and play guitar—a passion he carried with him throughout his life, even up to his final days. He sang often, sometimes at the most unexpected or inconvenient times, but always with joy. His family will deeply miss hearing his voice fill the room.
He is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, as well as many dear friends and brothers he lost during his time in service. He was also welcomed in heaven by many beloved pets, especially his faithful yellow lab, Nikki. He leaves behind two cats he adored.
Donald requested no formal service. He will be laid to rest with his parents in his home state of Virginia.
He lived a full and beautiful life, surrounded by love. Though his family mourns his loss, they find comfort in knowing he is reunited with his wife, his loved ones, and the friends he held close in his heart for so many years.
In one of the songs he wrote, I’ve Got My Jesus, Donald left behind words that reflect the faith and strength he carried throughout his life:
“When life’s many burdens get too heavy to bear, just look up to Jesus—He’ll always be there.”
He was deeply loved. He was one of a kind. And we were so lucky he was ours.
& as a final sign off
Love ya, YEE HAA, GR PA PA
