Dorothy Mae Sommerfeld passed away May 10, 2025 in Mineral Wells, Texas after a long and useful life. She was 100 years old.
Dorothy was born in Hamilton County, Texas on November 24, 1924.
In addition to raising her children, beginning in 1967 she had a long career with the Head Start Program. She began as a part-time substitute teacher, and soon became a full-time Head Start teacher. She furthered her skills by completing a program of specialized study in early childhood development at Stephen F. Austin University. She loved her students and continued to follow their achievements as they furthered their education in the Mineral Wells ISD and throughout their lives.
Dorothy was a supporter of the Boyce Ditto Public Library and beginning with her own, showed children the enrichment that books bring. She was a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church in Mineral Wells.
She was preceded in death by parents Ora Mae and William Luna Winningham; her husband of 73 years Gilbert S. Sommerfeld; her brother Virgil Winningham and sisters Lunora Murphy, Mildred Spivey, and Kaye Noble. She is survived by her five children: Kathleen Gail Brown and husband Wayne, Larry Streger and wife Anne, Bettye Sue Parker, Lu Ann Harrrington, and Sandra Lynn Shrout and numerous grand and great grandchildren.
A viewing for Dorothy will be held May 15th from 4-8 pm at Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner Funeral Home. Service will be held May 16th at St. Marks Lutheran Church at 2 pm followed by a graveside service at Woodland Park Cemetery.
