George Merrill Utley, 65, passed away November 5, 2025 peacefully in his sleep in Mineral Wells, Texas. He was born September 5, 1960 the son of Robert V. Utley and Mildred Chandler Utley in Milan, Tennessee. George worked in the electric power savings industry in Petaluma, California, the mortgage brokerage industry in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the telecommunications equipment finance business in Memphis, Tennessee.
George was a member of the 1977 Milan High School AA State Championship football team and a USMA graduate with the West Point Class of 1982. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry and served on active duty from May 26, 1982 until May 26, 1987 with duty assignments at the 8th Infantry Division in Mainz, West Germany and the US Army Aviation Center in Fort Rucker, Alabama. George was promoted to Captain and was decorated with the Army Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Overseas Service Ribbons, and earned his Parachute Badge and Ranger Tab.
Survivors include his mother, Mildred Hestand; his brother, Larry Utley; sister Diane Turek; his uncles, William A. Chandler and Edward Witt Chandler; nephew, Jake Utley; and his nieces, Katherine Toon, Suzanne Bieri, Stephanie Winwright, and Whitney Neary.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert V. Utley; his sister, Lela Kay Utley; brother, Grady C. Utley; and his uncle, Lloyd A. Utley; J. Edward Hestand.
Formal Army Honors Burial service will be Thursday, December 11, 2025 at 2PM at the Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75211.
