Glen McAvoy

August 22, 1930 — July 25, 2022

Glen McAvoy, age 91, passed away on Monday, July 25, 2022, in Amarillo, Texas.

Glen was preceded in death by his wife of many years, Sue Wilhoit McAvoy; his son, Allen McAvoy; his four sisters, Ruby (Sis) Bridges, Ruth Newman, Lois McAnally, and Lorene Moore; and two brothers, Bill and Henry. Glen is survived by his daughter, Pam McSwain, and husband Vance; a special niece, Carla McAvoy; his grandchildren Amanda Calaway and husband Kevin, Jessica Cutler and husband Trevor, Evan McSwain and wife Melissa, and Ryan McSwain and wife Tricia; his great-grandchildren, Brasen, Sophia, Sydney, Scotlyn, Holden, Henley, Conley, and Carson; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Glen was born at home on August 22, 1930, the fifth child of Fred and Tempe McAvoy. He graduated from Graford High School and served in the US Army. He married Sue McAvoy in 1952, and went to work in highway construction, building and repairing most of the highways in the Texas Panhandle and, later, in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. He and Sue purchased a two-room cabin on Possum Kingdom Lake and spent 30 years expanding it. In September of 2000, they returned to Amarillo, where he lived until his death. He enjoyed volunteering at the Thomas E. Creek VA Medical Center. In his final years, he was grateful for the love and support provided by his daughter, Pam.

Along with his family, Glen loved fishing, hosting fish fries, shooting pool, and spoiling bulldogs. He never stopped building and fixing, always having a big project to work on. Glen was a Master Mason in Good Standing of the Graford Masonic Lodge #1026, and he was a member of the organization for over 50 years. His family and friends will always remember him for his quiet strength and enduring sense of humor.

A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 6, at Pickwick McAdams Cemetery, Possum Kingdom Lake. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Glen's life. The family would like to thank Travis Bridges for fulfilling Glenn's final wish of receiving the Masonic funeral rites. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Possum Kingdom East Volunteer Fire Department (358 N FM 2353, Graford, TX, 76449, https://pkvfd.com/) or a local food bank.
