Mary Jane Dunaway was born on October 15, 1927 in Natty Flat, Texas to William and Sarah Pilkington. She went to be with her Heavenly Father on August 1, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Mary Jane was born on a farm and was the youngest of eight siblings. As a young woman, she worked as a telephone operator before marrying her husband, Vaughn Dunaway Sr. in 1954. She and Vaughn raised their two children, Sarah and Vaughn Jr. in Mineral Wells. They owned and operated several successful businesses including Vaughn Dunaway Motor Company and Sturdivant-Dunaway Oil Company before Vaughn’s passing in 1989.
Mary Jane embodied the fruit of the spirit in all areas of her life. She loved her church family at Southside Church of Christ where she was a faithful member for over 80 Years.
She loved to play all types of games and could still beat you at a game of canasta at 98 years old.
She is survived by her children, Sarah Patterson and husband Bill Patterson, and Vaughn Dunaway Jr.; grandchildren, Rebecca Burks and husband Tyler Burks, Matthew Vaughn Patterson, and Sarah Evans; great grandchildren, Luca, Murphy Vaughn, and Kobe; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was proceeded in death by her father and mother, William and Sarah Pilkington, her brothers and sisters, Bertha, Clayton, Marie, Bill, Odell, Lola, Gay and her husband, Vaughn Dunaway Sr.
Mary Jane will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Southside Church of Christ with the service following at 11 a.m. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m., at Evergreen Cemetery in Lipan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hope Harbor Children’s Home in Claremore, Oklahoma and Foster’s Home for Children in Stephenville, Texas.
