April 23, 1949 — May 22, 2024

Mineral Wells

Michael Curtis Southern was born on April 23, 1949, at Nazareth Hospital in Mineral Wells to James Curtis and Esta Mae Southern. Michael, 75, passed away on May 22, 2024, in Fort Worth after a brief illness.

Michael graduated from Mineral Wells High School in 1967 and later received his Bachelor's Degree in General Studies from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. He was a respiratory therapist. His career spanned over 30 years at several hospitals in the metroplex and Mineral Wells. Michael retired from Harris Southwest Hospital in Fort Worth in 2015. He was a member of The Church in Fort Worth.

Michael married the love of his life, Jean (Janice) Baillie, on June 19, 1976, in Dallas, Texas. They met at the State Fair of Texas. He was from a peach orchard with peach fuzz hair, and she was from a mining village in Scotland with coal-black hair. They had two children, daughter Kylie, son Jamie, and wife Megan. They were later blessed with four grandchildren, Baillie and Chloe Brock, Grayson, and Jonah Southern. Michael and Janice moved to the family farm in Mineral Wells, where he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, spending time with family, and spreading the Gospel with whomever he met. He also took delight in his herd of Highland cows. He was often found walking the pasture with his grandchildren tending his cattle, giving each one of them a name. Along with his immediate family, he loved spending time with his cousins and planning many gatherings and family reunions. He had the gift of hospitality.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, James Curtis and Esta Mae Southern. Janice preceded him in death on October 6, 2020, and sister-in-law May Robertson and husband Tom. Survived by his brother, Gary Southern, and spouse Sharon; sister, Debbie Greene, and spouse Tom, all of Mineral Wells; sister, Karen Graham, and spouse Bill of Leander; and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as his Uncle Bruce Hearne of Haltom City. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Bill Baillie and wife, Charlotte; sister-in-law Marion Inglis and husband Tom; and numerous other relatives in Scotland.
